Hey y’all.
So, obviously I decided to take a hiatus from blogging and social media to focus on my family after my grandmother’s passing — I didn’t think it would take nearly half a year, but here we are . . . or at least here I am. I honestly don’t know if anyone ever reads these things, but I’ll trek on (I’m paying for this site, so I may as well use it, am I right?)
Well, let’s get into it. “What exactly have you been up to, Charlie?” Why thank you for asking.
Amid all of the things death brings into one’s life — especially the death of a close family member — I think I’m justified in that I haven’t been as productive in my writing as I would normally like. Having said that, I’ve still made some slow progress forward.
I’ve written and edited a few more chapters in Echoes of Reed House, my supernatural murder mystery, and only have a few more to go. Given I still have things to deal with concerning the family and adjusting to the new paradigm my life is slotting itself into, I’m not striving to continue my mad dash to write four books at a time. Instead, I’m writing one chapter of Echoes of Reed House a week amidst a few other projects. And, considering I only have five installments left, that shouldn’t take too long and will give me plenty of time to juggle writing and life.
Alongside that, I’ve been working with a friend of mine, a fellow writer, on creating a co-written, high-fantasy series. It’s in its infancy — we’re still crafting the world and moving all the plot points in place — so we won’t be writing anything for it just yet unless inspiration hits us like an anvil. And the world-building’s been good for me; it gives me something to do that’s productive but also something I enjoy to immerse myself with. And, because it won’t be attached to my greater shared ethos of stories, it means I and she have free reign to allow our creativity to run with wild abandon — something I haven’t been able to do in quite a while.
But, somewhat annoyingly, I’ve also been worrying over actually getting myself onto YouTube to start a friggin’ author platform that’s needed to happen for, like, three years! (Cue the nervous laughter.) But, I’ve had an idea that I’ve toyed with for a while: write short stories, narrate them, and post the audio on YouTube. This’ll give people a taste of my style and actually put my work out there concerning characters and worlds that aren’t connected to my greater ethos — in fact, if I can reach enough views, I can technically get paid for my work without even having to go through publishing to do it. (Of course I still intend on publishing my work, though — this isn’t to be a lazy publishing strategy. Fret not!) This isn’t the only thing I want to do with YouTube, but it’ll be something I can do right now to at least get my foot in the door.
And, like I said, I’ve had this idea for a hot minute. I just never actually wrote anything or even brain-stormed ideas that might become content. However, this time’s different. I’ve actually written three short stories already — one stand alone, and two in a series of four. Not to mention, I’ve planned a thirteen part mini series full of monsters for Halloween — the spoopiest and funnest time of year to have monstrous content and not be considered a psycho, haha.
Now, in the short-term, building up a reserve of short stories for YouTube content and finishing ERH are my only goals apart from actually recording and posting the short stories on the Tube of You. But I’m not ignoring the all encompassing hungry void of existential crisis that is the future — in fact, I’ve planned multiple things that need to begin (and preferably be completed to some degree) by the end of this year and-or the beginning of the next. They are as follows.
Rewrite my first ever completed novel, The Seat of Qath, because I went into it assuming I was writing a series of multiple short stories, and so didn’t structure it very well when it turned into a 100k word novel.
Finish Our Holy Mother: Secrets, book two in the four part series.
Start writing in my apocalyptic short story series, only known as Project Apocalypse.
Finish the first beta-reader cycle of Our Holy Mother: Evercrown so I can begin on edits/rewrites.
This list, however, is going to have to happen in stages. Not everything’s gonna happen at once, not everything’s gonna get finished right away, and (realistically) not everything’s gonna get touched this year despite my wanting it to. But, it’ll all eventually be completed. And, though I don’t have a set-in-stone plan for what’ll happen when concerning the above list, I do know I want to prioritize The Seat of Qath — it’s sat on the shelf long enough that I can look at it with little to no memory of the finer details, giving me something equivalent to a beta-reader’s perspective while still vaguely remembering ideas I had to improve the story over a year ago.
How will I juggle all this? Darned if I know. But, in the short-term, I know I only want to work on one chapter of ERH a week, and work on one or two short stories for the YouTubes a week. That’s nothing compared to what I used to do (like, eh, five or six chapters a week, every week until the project was done) but it’s what I know I can handle and still work on this big ol’ thing called life.
In the mean time, maybe I’ll set up a goal tracker on this website so you and I can monitor my progress and see how i space things out on the weekly. I mean, it’s not like I still have to update this website with characters and a myriad of improvements to help with navigation — no, not at all! (Again, cue the nervous laughter.)
Alright, y’all, that’ll be it this time, I think. Be blessed and prosperous and may the works of your hands be multiplied! See ya!
